Who can build an AI marketing team for a UK small business?

Three ways to get an AI marketing team as a UK small business, what each costs in time and money, and what to check before you hire anyone.

A UK small business has three ways to get an AI marketing team. An agency can build and run one for you for a monthly fee. A specialist can build the tools for your own staff to run. Or you can learn to do it yourself, with free and subsidised help from public bodies. The right choice depends on how much work you want taken off you, and who checks it before your customers see it.

What is an AI marketing team?

It is a set of AI tools, each doing one marketing job, with a person in charge. One tool researches what your buyers are asking. Another writes the pages that answer them. Others keep your reviews answered, your listings consistent and your reports up to date. A person sets the plan and approves the work before it goes out.

Marketing is where most businesses start. The government's AI adoption research, updated in February 2026, found the most common areas for AI are "marketing (72%), administration (72%) and IT (64%)". Among businesses using or planning to use AI, "over three quarters (77%) cited creative and content creation".

How many small businesses use AI already?

Fewer than you might think. The same research found "around 1 in 6 businesses (16%) are currently using at least one AI technology". Use rises with size.

The barriers businesses give most often are "a lack of identified need for AI (71%) and limited AI skills, expertise and knowledge (60%)".

When asked which barriers matter most, 80% named ethical concerns and 76% named high costs.

So most small businesses are still at the start, which leaves room for the ones that move first.

Which route suits your business?

01

Done for you

An agency builds and runs the team, publishes the work and reports back.

Your time: an approval and a monthly call
02

Built for you

A specialist sets up the tools, and your own staff run them.

Your time: hours every week
03

Do it yourself

You learn the tools, with free and subsidised public support.

Your time: most of the work

Done for you suits a business that wants results without adding hours to anyone's week. Ask for a written scope and a monthly price before you sign.

Built for you suits a business with a marketer already on the team. The tools save them time, but they still do the running.

Do it yourself suits an owner who wants to understand the tools first. It costs least in money and most in time.

Where can you get free or subsidised help?

Start with your local Growth Hub. The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Hub, for example, offers "free business support" starting with "a free business review", and runs events on topics as "diverse as AI for business or marketing to workforce wellbeing, productivity and finance basics". Search for the Growth Hub in your area to see what it runs.

For leadership skills, look at Help to Grow: Management. It is a 12-week course costing "£750 per person", with "90% of the cost" paid by the government. It is open to people in "a UK-based SME employing 5–249 people" who hold "a senior leadership or decision-making role" and "have at least one direct report". Business schools deliver it: the University of Surrey's next course starts on 7 October 2026.

What should you check before you hire anyone?

Ask every provider the same five questions, and compare the answers side by side.

  1. What will be built, and where will it be published? Pages published on your own website stay yours.
  2. Who approves the work? Ask for a named person who signs off every page before it goes live.
  3. How will you see the results? Ask what the report shows, and how often it arrives.
  4. How will they measure whether AI tools recommend you? Ask for a starting benchmark, so you can see what changes.
  5. How is your data handled? The Information Commissioner's Office publishes guidance on AI and data protection, including "a detailed overview of how to apply the principles of the UK GDPR to the use of information in AI systems". Ask each provider how they follow it.

How do you know if AI tools recommend your business?

You can test it today. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your customers ask, such as "who is the best accountant for a small business in Truro?", and write down who they name. Ask each question more than once, because the answers vary.

How does the Scott Charnley AI marketing team work?

Our AI marketing team is the done-for-you route. It is trained on your business and your industry. Each month it puts your buyers' questions to the AI engines and Google, finds the questions where a competitor is named and you are not, and writes the pages that answer them. A Client Manager approves every page before it goes live on your website, and your own portal shows every result.

It starts with a strategy session and a benchmark audit. Programmes run for 12 months, from £3k a quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Can a small business afford an AI marketing team?

Yes, if you choose the route to match your budget. Free help from your Growth Hub costs nothing, Help to Grow: Management costs £750, and done-for-you services charge a monthly fee.

Do I need technical skills?

For the done-for-you route, no. For the other two routes, someone in your business will need to learn the tools.

Will AI write things about my business that are wrong?

It can, which is why every page needs a person to check it against its sources before it is published.

How long before AI tools start naming my business?

Ask any provider to measure where you stand first, then re-measure every month. A starting benchmark is the only honest way to see what has changed.
